Sumo wrestling, drumming, dissecting owl pellets and exploring the woods were just some of the “awesome” activities children and their teachers enjoyed at the 3rd county play event this September.
350 children and young people from schools across Lincolnshire attended the annual play event at Hartsholme country park in Lincoln and for once this summer the sun was shining.
This free event is hosted by The County Play Development Group made up of play, sport and leisure officers from the 7 district council’s in Lincolnshire and their partners.
It offers Lincolnshire schools both primary, secondary and special needs the opportunity for their pupils to experience a wide range of play activities in a safe and stimulating environment.
“We organise the event to inspire, delight and encourage children and their teachers to play, experiment, get messy, be active and learn new things” said Clare Bryan Play Development officer for the children’s charity Children’s Links and one of the organisers. “Play meets all the outcomes of the every child matters agenda and can play a key role in delivering both the creative and physical aspects of the curriculum”.
This year’s event was themed around nature play and included pond dipping, nature trails, bird watching, den building and working with natural materials as well as arts, science, music, outdoor sports and physical activities.
The event also raises awareness of the importance of play and the playwork that is happening around the county. This ranges from the development of mobile play services and buses into community spaces to the building of new play facilities and parks increasing children and young peoples access to better play opportunities and play environments.
