Over 600 children took part in play activities across Lincolnshire this summer thanks to the Children’s Links play team.
Working with partners in Boston, South Kesteven, New Linx housing on the east coast , Sleaford Sure Start and RAF Cottesmore we provided play days and events aimed at getting families outdoors and playing together.
Despite yet another miserable summer when we all thought the sun would shine brighter the success of the activities and the huge numbers attending just proves that families are not deterred by the rain and desperately looking for things to do locally and at low cost.
Our play days are unique in offering themed play activities where children of all ages can mix and this year the audience ranged from the under 5’s through to 14 year olds.
Children had the opportunity to become pirates, spies and cowboy and Indians for the day , they cooked on fires, built dens, climbed trees, walked tightropes and enjoyed the thrill of water slides. Outside providers brought go karts climbing walls and circus tricks.
Clare Bryan Play Developer at Children Links said “ you never forget the thrill of supervising 50 children all lined up on their hand and knees on opposite side of a playing field, half dressed as cowboys the other as Indians and all of them raring to go into battle with each other”. (Ps no one gets killed)
Children totally get what these days are about, they love the thrill of the chase, being with their friends, having the freedom to make things up and play at their own pace . Sometimes the simplest things are what they enjoy the most such as “lighting fires, baking bread and eating marshmallows, being able to construct dens and play freely outdoors”
Parents like the fact that these sorts of activities are not usually offered at home and they like “the organised freedom” it gives their children to let them have fun and experience some risky and challenging activities .
